Roof Damage: What to Do After a Hailstorm

Roofs are built to be sturdy and long-lasting. However, there are times that severe weather conditions can damage them despite their reliable construction and materials. Hailstorms are one of the more common forms of severe weather that can damage your roofing system.

In this post, roof and gutter installation expert STARR Roofing & Gutters shares information on what to do to check your roof after a hailstorm hits your area.

Inspecting the Interior

After the hailstorm, you can start assessing the damage done to your roof from the inside. Go up to your attic and check if moisture has penetrated your roofing system. Holes, dents and cracks that are visible from the inside can mean that the damage to the exterior is significant. If any holes are exposing your indoors to the elements, put a bucket underneath them or cover them with a tarp. Don’t attempt to fix them on your own as this could void your roofing warranties.

Inspecting the Exterior

When it’s safe to do so, go outside and check your roof from the street. Prepare a notebook or bring your phone to document your findings. Look for the biggest intact hailstone you can find around your property, then put it in a sealable bag. Place this bag of hailstone in your freezer. This will help prove the severity of the recent hailstorm to the insurance company.

You can also search for blown-off shingles and granules on the ground and note any visibly damaged sections on your roof. Check your gutters for debris by attaching your camera to a pole or selfie stick to get a snapshot of hard-to-reach places. Also, make sure to call your roof maintenance contractor to do a thorough inspection later.

Calling Your Insurance Company and a Roofer

Call your insurance company to inform them of your situation and the extent of damage to your roof. An adjuster will be scheduled to visit your home to assess the damage, but it’s also recommended to hire your own trusted roofer. This way, you can be sure you’re getting a fair payout from your insurance.
