Preventing Roof Damage From Animals

While roofs are built to protect your home from different kinds of weather and climates, they are still susceptible to other elements that can damage them — for instance, animals. While it may seem unlikely, animal damage can be as common as storm damage, depending on your local fauna and how you deal with the problem.

Nonetheless, there are several ways you can prevent roof damage from animals. STARR Roofing & Gutters share some tips here.

Trim Surrounding Trees

Trees are commonly used by pests and critters to get to your home. Squirrels, skunks and raccoons can use the branches of the trees surrounding your property to reach your roof. After that, they will scratch and claw their way into different sections of your roof, causing damage as they step on your shingles. Trimming tree branches, especially those long and sturdy ones that reach near your home, can help prevent these animals from getting onto your roof.

Clean Your Gutters

Gutters can easily get filled by debris and dirt, especially if you don’t clean them regularly. Gutter installation and cleaning experts typically find bird nests when checking gutters. This is because gutters clogged and filled with debris are perfect for birds to create a nest in. Gutters have an abundance of materials that the animals can use for their nests. To prevent this from happening, schedule regular gutter cleaning sessions.

Perform Regular Maintenance on Your Roof

The best way to prevent or spot animal damage on your roof is to regularly perform roof maintenance. Animals commonly enter through vents, chimneys, soffits and holes on the roof. They can also take advantage of soft and rotting roof materials, such as damaged roof decking. Routine maintenance can address several existing problems with your roof and gutters, thus preventing critters from being attracted to your home.
