How Trees Cause Damage to Your Roof and Home

Trees are a desirable feature to have because they provide shade, wind protection, water filtration and beauty to your landscaping. As wonderful as they are, they can pose a threat to your roof and the rest of your home in many different ways. Trusted residential and commercial roofing contractor STARR Roofing & Gutters discusses them below.

Trees and Their Impact on Your Home’s Foundations

Tree roots grow slowly beneath the soil, continuously searching for water and nutrients. As this happens, the soil around them gets displaced, compromising its integrity. If it moves, whatever is sitting on it moves, too. The roots don’t necessarily pierce through a building’s foundation, but their growth and the subsequent soil displacement are enough to cause the structure to settle and sink unevenly. The roots can also penetrate underground drainage pipes and other plumbing systems.

The Proximity of Leaves and Branches to Your Home

Unless trimmed regularly by an arborist, tree leaves and branches can grow excessively until they touch the surface of your home exterior. They can become fire hazards, with soffit vents providing easy access for flames to enter the house. Also, leaves and broken branches can collect on your roof and gutters, resulting in moisture accumulation and clogs, respectively. An old, damaged or otherwise weak tree may fall during a severe storm, necessitating roof replacement if the inflicted damage is too extensive.

Tips to Prevent or Minimize Tree Damage

Prevention is the key to avoiding costly tree root damage. Before planting one on your property, make sure you select a certain type of tree or shrub that poses the least threat to structural systems. If you have one or more planted near your home, make it a point to have them trimmed regularly so the branches don’t overextend and brush against your home exteriors. Remove weak or dead trees within the range of your house immediately.
