3 Warning Signs of Storm Damage to Your Roof

As a general rule, you should have your roof inspected after a storm or extreme weather event. That’s because no matter how durable your roof is, it’s likely to have suffered some form of storm damage

What are the warning signs you need to keep an eye out for? Here’s an overview:

  • Dislodged granules – If you have a shingle roof, check if there are granules in your gutters or bald patches on your roof. Wind-driven debris can dislodge the protective granules embedded in the top layer of asphalt shingles. Without these UV-resistant granules, your shingle roof is left more vulnerable to premature aging and cracks. That’s why in most cases, contractors would recommend replacing them.

Here’s a tip: to reduce the risk of roofing damage caused by wind-driven debris, we recommend trimming overhanging tree branches that are easily knocked down by strong winds.

  • Lifted shingles – Strong winds can lift the edges of an asphalt shingle. This, in turn, starts a chain peeling effect, as gale-force winds can push against the lifted edges.
  • Water stains on the ceiling – If water managed to infiltrate your roof and accumulates in its underlayers, water stains may start to appear.

Important note: Since water follows the path of least resistance, the location of the water stains isn’t necessarily where the leaks started. That’s why if you notice water stains on your ceiling, it’s best to have a roof maintenance contractor conduct an inspection.

What If There Aren’t Any Leaks?

It would still be a good idea to schedule a roof inspection. That’s because it takes time for certain signs of storm damage to appear. And by the time they do emerge, it’s already too late to mitigate damage. If moisture or storm damage isn’t fixed immediately, it can easily affect other parts of your home.
